World Wildlife Fund

WWF is uniquely well placed to bring our world back to life. They’ve been protecting nature’s wonders for more than 60 years. And are now leading the way not just to protect our natural world but to restore it. They’re working globally with communities, governments, companies and others who have the will to act and transform our world.

WWF was the first organisation to develop a science-based strategy that focuses on the links between food, climate and biodiversity loss and remains at the forefront of this approach. They’re tackling these threats in three key ways: averting dangerous climate change, creating a sustainable food system and restoring threatened habitats and species.

Through strategic partnerships with companies, WWF can help them reduce their environmental impact and advocate together to move whole sectors towards better ways of doing business. WWF collaborates with communities and Indigenous peoples to develop long term strategies for protecting and restoring the natural world. WWF also works with policymakers to direct private capital away from environmentally damaging activity. Their work on policy and regulatory interventions helps to build a sustainable economy. Alongside financial institutions, they develop policy and financing solutions that can be scaled. In addition, WWF works with governments to build economies geared towards investment and job-creation in sustainable, nature-positive sectors, shifting the balance towards a future economy that works for people and nature.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

As one of Africa’s oldest wildlife charities and a leading conservation organisation, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) embraces all measures that complement the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife.

Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, SWT was established in 1977 and is best known for its Orphans’ Project, the first and most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. SWT is a pioneering conservation organisation, dedicated to the protection of wildlife and the preservation of habitats in East Africa. SWT is based in Nairobi, Kenya, with a field headquarters bordering Tsavo East National Park. It is a separately registered charity in the UK and is directly supported by Sheldrick Wildlife Trust USA, a registered 501(c)(3) in the United States.

Working across Kenya to secure safe havens for wildlife, SWT not only works to protect elephants and rhinos, but entire ecosystems and the diverse flora and fauna sustained in these places of stunning natural beauty. Over the years the work of the SWT has been featured in numerous publications, television productions and films. This has helped more people around the world better understand the nature of elephants, rhinos and other wild species and importantly the efforts being taken by the Trust to protect them.

SWT opens its doors to the public for one-hour every day. This is a special, time-honoured tradition in which the public is invited to learn more about SWT’s conservation work and meet the orphans in their care. Those wishing to visit need to make a booking in advance, to ensure there is availability.

Best Friends Animal Society

In 1984, a group of friends, half of them Brits, along with about 200 rescued dogs and cats, a few bunnies and birds, and a couple of burros landed in a remote canyon in Utah’s high desert and took the first steps on the path of what would become the U.S. no-kill movement for homeless pets.

The group had been individually and collectively involved in animal rescue and advocacy for a number of years, rescuing dogs and cats with special needs and from high-risk shelters. And like most rescuers, they shared a dream of having “a place in the country” where they could bring in as many animals as they wanted without concern about neighbors or landlords. That dream came true, but they had no idea where it would lead. They had no idea at the time that what they were about to start would become a nationwide movement. The goal was to make not just a place to house homeless pets but a place of healing — a place where every animal, regardless of any special needs, would feel welcomed and every pet would be considered unique and adoptable. It would be a place that exemplified the truth that kindness to animals makes a better world for all of us.

The philosophy of Best Friends is simple: Be kind. It’s what led to starting the Sanctuary in the first place — the knowledge that there were animals out there with no one to look after them, often being killed in shelters, and that if we could do even something small to help them, then we should. That philosophy extends to our belief in how we should treat one another and our members, how we should treat shelters and other animal welfare groups, and how we should treat the world at large. In 2016, Julie Castle announced Best Friends’ commitment to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters across the U.S by the end of 2025. It would mean working hand in hand with other like-minded groups across the country; building strong, positive collaborations with shelters; thinking up creative and innovative programming; and coming together as a nationwide Best Friends community more than ever.
